The Apollo High School Theatre Department brought home some awards and recognitions with their performance at the Kentucky Theatre Association’s State Competition this weekend.

Apollo placed in the top five schools with their performance of AND by Alan Haehnel. They also received the “Best Ensemble” judge’s discretionary award, and Braxton Powers received the “All Star Cast” award. Apollo’s Theatre received an overall superior rating from all three judges as well.

After performing, students watched performances from other high schools around the state and attended theatre workshops taught by Western Kentucky University theatre professors. The competition took place at WKU.

“I am so proud of these students and their hard work and dedication to theatre,” said Theatre Director April Berry.

State level competitive events in the arts provide powerful connections to others in areas of the performing arts. Reinstating these in-person competitive events in theatre has been challenging throughout the pandemic, but Kentucky Theatre Association made this event a priority.

AHS was one of only 12 schools across the state qualifying to present their 45-minute productions in front of their peers and a panel of judges to compete for awards.

Prior to the event, DCPS Fine and Performing Arts Coordinator Karen Alward said, “The resilience demonstrated by these student actors and their teacher April Berry throughout the pandemic has been paramount to their ability to set and achieve high performance goals in their art form.”
