The Daviess County High School Orchestra will present its annual Christmas concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the school auditorium.

Admittance to the concert is free, though donations are welcome. Chocolate and peanut butter fudge will be available for purchase.

The concert, directed by Karen Higdon, Kyle Payton and four student conductors, will feature holiday favorites such as Sleigh Ride as well as music from The Greatest Showman, themes from the video game Minecraft and a rousing version of Dueling Jingle Strings a la Blazing Saddles.

All proceeds from this event will be used to fund the orchestra’s participation in the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) National Orchestra Festival, which will be held in Atlanta on March 16-18. Donations are also welcome and may be sent to the DCHS Orchestra, 4255 New Hartford Road, Owensboro KY 42303.

The ASTA National Orchestra Festival is held each year in conjunction with the ASTA National Conference. The DCHS Orchestra will receive feedback from expert adjudicators as well as participating in an educational clinic. Students may also attend educational sessions associated with the conference.

“Our goal is to provide an educational, fun and competitive opportunity for our young musicians,” DCHS orchestra director Karen Higdon said. “This program allows students to showcase their individual talents. This is the most passionate and hardworking group of kids I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. I believe they deserve the best experience available, and we need the support of our community to make that possible.”

Contributions to the DCHS Orchestra’s participation in the ASTA National Orchestra Festival will help cover registration fees, passes to exhibit rooms for all students, travel to and from Georgia and two nights at an Atlanta hotel.
