A Christmas Carol is coming to life at this week through Bluegrass Community Theatre’s retelling of the classic holiday show — with a bit of an Owensboro twist. Admission is pay-what-you-can, and the show will be suitable for all ages.

The show will take place at 7 p.m. nightly Thursday-Saturday in Owensboro Community & Technical College’s Blandford Hall.

The hour-and-15-minute performance will still follow the famed Ebenezer Scrooge as he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future to learn the truth about community, friendship, and family.

Director Grae Greer said they originally performed the show in 2019, but she felt so much has occurred in the past 3 years that it was important to revisit it.

“This is an adaptation made specifically for Bluegrass Community Theatre and the town of Owensboro,” Greer said. “We make jokes about the traffic on 54 and discuss individuals experiencing homelessness in the community… something we know the community is working hard towards reducing. This version feels closer to home.”

In addition to the show, Greer noted there are a few roles that have women portraying traditionally male characters — such as Bob Cratchit, who is now Bee a single mother of four, just as Bob was.

“We made these changes to feature our actors,” Greer said. “We had an overwhelming amount of talented individuals and ultimately adjusted the genders to fit the actors we had. I promise you won’t be disappointed.”
