Lisa Thompson and Andrea Hayse created The Unique Nest – a consignment store featuring antique and vintage items – during the summer of 2021. Before collaborating on the new business venture, the two spent much of their downtime peddling items at various consumer malls and events.

The store is located at 1303 Breckenridge Street and features a plethora of new, used, and re-newed home decor and furniture. They also offer a small line of jewelry and vintage hats.

“I was downsizing from a large house, and she had a lot of stuff, so we decided to open our own store,” Thompson said. “We wanted to give back to the community, and we couldn’t do that at other places.”

The two take great pride in their ability to give back, using portions of the revenue generated from donated items to contribute to local nonprofit organizations. They most recently assisted in furnishing the homes of Afgahnee refugees to help ease the assimilation process.

“We love being able to give back and be a part of the community,” she said. “We love having the store because we can develop such great relationships with our customers. We know a lot of them personally.”

Thompson said there are times when regulars will simply venture into the store to talk or to visit with Hayse’s pet bird and dog, named Ava and Willow.

Both Thompson and Hayse are nurses by trade and take great pride in calling Owensboro home. Thompson is a McLean County native, while Hayse ventured across the river from Rockport.

“We’ve had phenomenal support from the community. Everyone that comes in loves our store,” Thompson said. “This was something Owensboro needed; it’s very unique. We have shoppers from out of state, even Louisville and Nashville. They say it’s one of the best they’ve been into.”

The store also boasts artwork and crafts by local artists and a mixture of natural products. They are open on Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

The two have arranged the store in a manner that aligns with one’s home. Thompson said it helps customers envision how the products might fit into their space.
