The United Way of the Ohio Valley (UWOV) opened in 1943 and presently serves six counties including: Daviess, Ohio, Union, Hancock, Webster, and McLean. This past year, the UWOV partnered with 55 nonprofit organizations in the service area that provide health, education, financial stability, and emergency services.

The mission of the United Way is to unite communities to deliver solutions that improve the lives of individuals and families. One way they fulfill this mission is with their 2-1-1 service, which is open 24/7, 365 days a year.

“The 2-1-1 call line is a resource connector for people that need food, shelter, utility, or rent assistance,” said director of resource development and marketing Stephanie Bertram. “People can just call this line and we will connect them with resources in their area.”

The group conducts an annual ‘Day of Caring’ every summer where they organize and orchestrate a wide array of volunteer opportunities within the community. This year’s event will begin on June 17. Organizers expect it to be the largest one they’ve had.

“We are proud to announce this our largest one-day volunteer collaboration we have organized,” Bertram said. “We have 25 projects planned in Daviess County in the nonprofit sector, requiring more than 200 volunteers.”

Events will range from landscaping, painting, organizing, building wheelchair ramps, repaving parking lots, and more. Bertram said the UWOV is also hosting several food and material drives across Daviess County.

If anyone is interested in getting involved with United Way of the Ohio Valley or wants more information, they can call the office at 270-684-0668 or email Bertram at [email protected]. Additional information is available on their website here.

“Owensboro is a community thriving to work together to solve tough issues,” she said. “We are honored to be a small part of this collaboration and grateful that we can make a difference in so many lives.”

The Chamber Member of the Week program is a membership benefit of the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce. Founded in 1913, the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce has worked for over a century to provide valuable benefits and services to member businesses and individuals.

Today, with a membership base of nearly 1,000, the Chamber is a guiding force in community and business development initiatives, serving as the center of business advocacy for the Greater Owensboro region.
