Owensboro is now home to a one-of-a-kind, do-it-yourself (DIY) studio by way of Hammer & Stain on West 4th Street. Kenneth Keller and co-owners Kenny Payner and Eric Paulson opened the shop more than three months ago and haven’t slowed down since.

The concept is simple: Hammer & Stain provides all the materials and space needed to create the ultimate home decor piece. With many workshops to choose from, instructors then guide guests through a project from start to finish.

“A typical class will last 2-2.5 hours, depending on the size of the furniture,” Keller said. “We will help you select stain and paint color options and provide written instructions at each table in case you get lost.”

Keller added that he and the team are very hands-on throughout each workshop and are always available to answer any questions and provide assistance. Throughout the workshops, Keller encourages guests to progress at their own pace and refrain from comparing themselves to anyone else.

“These are your projects and your experiences, so have fun, enjoy yourself, and be proud of your creation,” he said.

The beauty of the entire concept is once the project is complete, Hammer & Stain only asks guests to do one thing: pose for a photo. That means Hammer & Stain will oversee all the clean-up duties.

The ongoing workshops range from a standard open paint at $10 to a large-frame sign workshop for $65. With a plethora of options to choose from, there is truly something for everyone, Keller said. Click here to see their many workshop opportunities.

Keller said they also offer themed workshops, including “Moms Night Out” and “Date Night,” where guests are welcome to bring their favorite drink. Other offerings include children’s parties, private parties, fundraisers, ceramic workshops, and more.

Hammer & Stain is located at 411 West 4th Street in downtown Owensboro. Visit hammerandstainowb.com or search for them on Facebook to learn more.

“No crafting experience is required,” Keller said. “Our workshops provide guided instruction in a relaxed environment; just bring a DIY attitude and a willingness to learn, and you will create a project you can be proud of.”
