WBKR has added a new face to their morning show duo, as Mary-Katherine Maddox will join co-host Chad Benefield beginning May 1. Maddox is ready to be on the air, saying excited to build tight connections with the community.

Maddox is taking over as co-host and content creator following the departure of Angel Welsh, who left recently to focus on her new nonprofit full time. WBKR’s morning show is broadcast weekdays from 6-10 a.m. on their radio station 92.5.

Maddox said she has been friends with Benefield for at least a decade and was nudged to apply for the position when it opened. She said one thing that she immediately felt connected to during the audition was the way WBKR gets to know its listeners.

“We had somebody call in on the day that I auditioned and Chad knew where they lived, how many kids they have, and that they had a pot-bellied pig. The fact that the morning show hosts are able to get to know their listeners and really become a part of their lives is something special,” Maddox said.

Maddox noted she doesn’t have a background specifically in radio. However, with a communications degree and several years of talking and presenting to the public — including here time with Theatre Workshop in Owensboro and other community organizations — she is ready to hit the ground running.

In the announcement of her role, WBKR presented 10 facts to get to know Maddox, but she told Owensboro Times that one other fact people should know about her is her passion for the city.

She said when she went to school at the University of Louisville, she would often get teased by her friends because of how much she would talk about Owensboro.

“I’ve just always loved this town and it’s just always felt very special to me,” she said. ” and “I just have a passion to make it better.”
