To thank the local first responders for their service to the community, Wendell Foster on Thursday held their 5th annual First Responders BBQ with the help of Chamber Young Professionals. Wendell Foster residents got to interact and show their support for the first responders who were able to attend.

Wendell Foster President Doug Hoyt said the organization continues to put on the event every year because to show they appreciate what first responders have to go through at work on a daily basis.

“I don’t go to work by strapping on a gun and a bulletproof vest. They do. And they go into a burning house and put their life at risk, and their families are still at home. It’s a very minimal thing that we’re able to do to offer them a sandwich, and it’s just a moment to say thank you,” he said.

Hoyt mentioned that it’s a mission in line with both Wendell Foster and CYP to give back to the community, and the added benefit is it allow residents at Wendell Foster to engage with the community.

Owensboro Police Department Public Information Officer Dylan Evans said he and the department are grateful for moments like the barbecue event.

“The support of the community is always nice to have. None of us got into this field for recognition. We got into this field because we love the community and want to help people,” Evans said.

CYP Vice Chair Jake Boswell noted he was thankful to be a part of the event and see the effects it has on both the residents and first responders.

“The conversations and the sense of community that was there all day today was awesome,” Boswell said.

After the lunch had been concluded, volunteers with CYP and Wendell Foster went out to the local stations to deliver excess hot dogs, hamburgers, and pork chops to first responders that weren’t able to make it to the event.
