Tamara Zaborac-Payton wanted to help her son Maverick have a hands-on experience with math and other lessons he was learning in school, while also combining it with a way to make some extra money. So, she and her son are now running Maverick’s Kettle Corn.
The idea to start a popcorn stand started when Zaborac-Payton saw a friend find some success in the business.
She said they’ve only done a handful of tabling at Val-U Liquors off of KY 54, and she has seen Maverick, age 5, practice the lessons already with some of the customers.
Ultimately, she said that her goal is to be able to homeschool Maverick and apply some of the skills he’s learned later in life.
“We’ve been really working on math equations with the kettle corn, and I think it’s a really cool thing to do with our son just to learn in a real-world setting and not have to be sitting in a classroom,” Zaborac-Payton said.
She said they have already received positive customer responses and even have some repeat customers.
Zaborac-Payton noted that with school back in session, they’ll be limited to setting up on weekends. She’s also hoping to set up downtown at Friday After 5 if possible.
With the summer festivities coming to a close, Zaborac-Payton said she wants to begin packaging the popcorn so they can continue to sell throughout the year.
“Maybe one day we can have it prepackaged to where I can just sell it that way out of the summer season, too,” she said.
