The painting of the newest mural at Kendall-Perkings Park has been rescheduled to August 26 after poor weather conditions on Saturday. The Owensboro Museum of Fine Art and the Owensboro Art Guild are joining forces for the project, a 19-foot-wide mural panel at Kendall-Perkins Park.

According to a release, the panel will pay tribute to African American history during the Civil War. It will contain images of U.S. Colored Troops and the burning of the Daviess County Courthouse.

“Officially 23,703 Kentucky African Americans responded to the call to arms, and Owensboro was a key entry point for many of these recruits,” the release said. “At great risk to themselves, men who enlisted in Owensboro served in the 100th, 109th, and 118th U.S. Colored Infantry and the 5th and 6th U.S. Colored Calvary.”

The preliminary work and the sketch work have already been completed. Area artists and non-artists will work together to paint the mural.

The board of directors from both organizations are excited about the collaboration creating this panel,” the release said. “Public art that can be shared in our community is of special importance to us both.”

The painting will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on August 28 at the park at 1201 West 5th Street.
