The Green River Area Down Syndrome Association’s (GRADSA) Buddy Walk returns this Saturday. The 26th annual event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Owensboro riverfront.

This year’s theme is “With Us, Not For Us” — a continuation of the National Down Syndrome Society’s (NDSS) annual theme. GRADSA Executive Director Britt Cobb said the theme strongly aligns with their mission of enabling families enriched with Down syndrome opportunities to connect and share resources.

“The NDSS’ entire goal is to help local organizations create a fundraiser during Buddy Walk,” Cobb said. “NDSS used the theme during 2022 to embrace a full human rights approach. Our goal is full inclusion in the community. We want to be viewed as partners, not charity.”

GRADSA began nearly 3 decades ago when parents of children with Down syndrome began increasing awareness in the community. They formed the Buddy Walk 26 years ago and officially obtained nonprofit status in 2001.

“We’re affiliated with the NDSS and the DSAI, always trying to grow and improve,” she said. “We’re constantly reviewing national trends and programming that traditionally leads to success,”

Cobb said their ultimate goal is to establish a community within a community. GRADSA offers services to anyone with Down syndrome, a relative or employee of a family member. Once a member joins, they’re welcome to remain a member for a lifetime.

“We’re grateful to our generous and supportive community partners for constantly going above and beyond to make these events a success,” she said.
