The local production of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” returns for its 4th year this Saturday. The local performance is an “interactive film production,” meaning excerpts from the movie will play while actors perform the show in sync.
As a musical, “The Rocky Horror Show” first premiered in 1973 as a humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the 1930s through to the early 1960s. “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is a 1975 independent musical comedy horror film based on the musical stage production.
Grae Greer, director of the local production, said the story has developed a cult following over the years. For this year’s version of the local production, Greer feels prepared to showcase something the audience will love.
“I think it’s different because I understand our community better, especially the ‘Rocky’ community. This is the 4th one that we’ve done at RiverPark Center, so I kind of know what people want and what they expect, and we’re able to kind of perfect that a little bit,” Greer said.
This year’s cast includes several people new to theatre, something Greer said is a result of the power of interactive film theatre.
“For me as the director and coordinator, it’s nice seeing the people who never would have gotten this opportunity to be onstage if it wasn’t for the interactive film,” Greer said.
Greer said that guests will get a bag of activities and things to do so they can also participate while the show is being performed.
The show starts at 9 p.m. on Saturday in Canon Hall, and tickets can be purchased here.
