An upgraded entrance facing Frederica Street is among the enhancement projects in the works for the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art after more than $2 million was raised during OMFA’s “Campaign for the Future.”

“More than $2.3 million was raised for facilities, endowment, and sustaining support. We are deeply grateful to those who participated in the campaign,” said Board of Directors Chairman Dr. James F. Naas.

Included in the campaign total was a $1 million gift for endowment, which provides a permanent source of income and financial stability for OMFA.

“With these resources in place, OMFA has already begun putting this generosity to work,” said Executive Director Mary Bryan Hood. “Several upcoming enhancements to the art museum’s historic buildings are underway and will be completed in the months ahead.”

Hood said that a new electronic sign will be installed at the OMFA Frederica Street entrance. The digital marquee is a gift of the Michael E. Horn Family Foundation.

According to a release, OMFA also will be “creating a new, welcoming entrance” on Frederica Street. The project will provide entry to the Texas Gas Atrium Sculpture Court and “reimagine how visitors experience the museum.” More information is expected in the coming weeks.

The Museum has also begun refurbishing the historic John Hampden Smith House, which was renamed the Medley Decorative Arts Wing in honoring Dr. and Mrs. R. Wathen Medley, Jr., the donors of the $1 million dollar endowment. Current improvements include new tuckpointing, and painting of fascia, shutters, and exterior walls. The facility, which houses the pre-20th century collection, is expected to be completed by late fall.

“All these improvements are occurring thanks to the generosity of individuals, companies, and foundations who share our passion for the arts and how they enhance education, economic development, and cultural tourism in the region,” Nass said.

The Owensboro Museum of Fine Art is the second-largest art museum in Kentucky. It is located at the corner of 9th and Frederica streets in Owensboro. The museum galleries are open Tuesday through Friday from 12-5 and weekends from 1-4. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged of $3 for adults and $2 for children.
