Planet Fitness is set to open its Frederica Street location in mid-November, and officials are excited for the future of the 24-hour gym.

The new location will be at 5000 Frederica Street Suite H15 in the former Burkes Outlet on the front side of the now-closed Towne Square Mall. Planet Fitness has direct access to the parking lot, meaning members won’t use the former mall entrance.

The roughly 23,000-square-foot location will have Black Card Spa amenities including tanning, red light therapy, massage chairs, HydroMassage recliners, and CryoLounge+ chairs.

According to Planet Fitness Marketing Director Ken Horn, the club will feature more than 100 pieces of cardio equipment including treadmills, elliptical machines, stairclimbers, bikes (upright and recumbent), indoor stationary racing cycles, rowers, and Sci-fit. The club will also have a full-strength training area highlighted by 6 Smith Machines. There will also be a 30-minute circuit training area as well as a PF360XL area with ropes, kettlebells, and other functional training equipment.

General Manager Kim Hidenrite said the opening date has not been solidified yet, but an online membership presale began Monday and in-person presales will begin next week. Hidenrite said there’s still some construction going on inside, but interested members can still come in and tour the facility.

Horn said the Classic-level members at the KY 54 location will be able to transfer their membership to the Frederica location if they choose. Classic membership only allows for one gym, Horn said. If someone wants to have memberships to both, they would have to sign up for a Black Card, which will grant them unlimited access to Planet Fitness clubs.

Plans start as low as $10 a month with no commitment. In addition, for $24.99/month, Planet Fitness Black Card members receive the added benefits including the ability to bring a guest every time, access to HydroMassage beds and massage chairs, the ability to work out at any of the 2,400+ Planet Fitness locations, and more.

Hidenrite said the success of the KY 54 gym showed a second location would also prove beneficial for the company.

“I was general manager at the KY 54 location, and I think that with the membership availability and the customers it needed a second location. I’m excited to see how well the new one does as big as it is right now and being brand new on that side of town,” Hindenrite said.
