The Bluegrass Community Theatre (BCT) is getting ready for the holidays this weekend with their sold-out show “Christmas Magic in Evergreen Village,” written by Grae Greer.
Greer, founder of BCT, said that when writing the show over the last year, she wanted to capture the essence of a Hallmark movie after several fans wished for one after last year’s Christmas performance.
“Somebody said, ‘Why don’t we just write one?’ And literally that week of tech week I started to write ‘Christmas Magic in Evergreen Village,’ and so it’s been a year-long process,” Greer said.
The show is a vignette story where different characters play throughout the show, and each ties back to the grander part of Evergreen Village. They do not shy away from being a play reminiscent of the famous holiday brand.
Greer said each of the stories plays into the typical storyline of making sure there is a happy ending. The guy gets the girl, of course, and there’s plenty of snow.
“It’s the same Hallmark-style ending. You’re not going to be surprised at the end of the show,” Greer said.
Even though Greer wrote the show, each of the 8 scenes has its own director.
With the smaller approach to the stories, Greer said directors and cast members were flexible with where they had rehearsals, such as in the movie theater or at homes.
The show sold out weeks in advance, making Greer excited for this weekend.
“The fact that people believe in what we’re doing, I think, is what makes my heart happy more than anything else,” she said. “… I think even if you’re not like a Christmas person, if you’re a Hallmark person, this show really appeals to you.”
