The Green River Firefighters Association will host its 37th annual Bryant Stiles Officers School at the Owensboro Convention Center from February 23 through the 25. The event was a long-time staple in Owensboro at the Executive Inn before moving to Lexington for a few years and returning with the convention center’s construction.

One of the organizers, Pat Thompson, expects over 1,000 fire personnel from Kentucky and the tri-state area to converge downtown for the event. He said the event offers the latest training for significant trends in fire service like recruitment, retention, mental health, strategy, tactics, and other areas.

“This event has grown a lot over the years, and we’re ecstatic to have it in Owensboro where it belongs,” Thompson said. “People always loved the Big E and having everything under one roof. They’re also enjoying the new setup, with the hotels close by and another on the way.”

On Saturday evening, patrons can meet equipment and apparatus vendors. Several of the vendors have been activating at the event since its conception.

“This gives firefighters and their families a chance to see the latest and greatest innovations in the industry,” he said. “It’s also a major economic boost for our local community.”

The school features diverse classes to help firefighters become better front-line supervisors and leaders. Attendees can also enjoy a firefighter appreciation party on Friday night with a DJ, dancing, prizes, food, and drinks.

Thompson said the 45,000-square-foot exhibition hall offers the perfect setting for visiting with friends and exploring the commercial vendors. Several door prizes are up for grabs on Saturday evening. Ms. Kentucky and Sparky the Fire Dog also plan to attend the event.
