Owensboro Middle School Principal Alisha Ferry has been named District 2 Administrator of the Year by the Kentucky Music Educators Association.
Ferry was nominated by band teacher Jason Smith, who spoke of her “unwavering support for every arts program and her ability to help teachers grow in their instruction.”
Ferry has more than 20 years of experience working in the Owensboro Public Schools district, with the last 5 as OMS principal.
“I am grateful to the committee for choosing me to receive this award and for recognizing my efforts to promote the arts in our community,” she said. “The art programs provide opportunities for all students to learn and grow. Any actions I’ve taken are simply supporting the outstanding programs in place for students, families and teachers.”
Ferry said that regularly attending performances is important to her, as it demonstrates support for arts programs.
“It allows me to express gratitude for the dedication and effort put forth by both the teacher and students,” she said. “In addition, I support the teacher’s expectations of students and provide feedback on instructional practices.”
Ferry said that nearly 50% of their students are involved in a musical art.
“Investing in our arts programs goes beyond fostering creativity,” she said. “It involves preparing students with the necessary skills, knowledge, and experiences for life beyond the middle school level.”
