“A Fine Remembrance” — the locally produced documentary about Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Moneta Sleet Jr. — will be shown next week at Brescia University.
The February 22 showing will be at Duffy Auditorium, located at the corner of Frederica and 9th streets, beginning at 6 p.m.
The inaugural Through Sleet’s Eyes Festival was held in Owensboro in 2023 to honor Sleet, who was the first Black person to win a Pulitzer Prize for Journalism. The event originated with the Leadership Owensboro Class of 2021, which took on the project of educating the community about one of Owensboro’s most prolific figures.
As a photojournalist for Ebony and Jet magazines along with other publications, Sleet toured the world taking photos of subjects ranging from Martin Luther King Jr. to Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie.
Leading up to the festival, Wonder Boy Media and the festival committee partnered to produce a documentary about Sleet. They traveled the nation interviewing people who had a relationship with Sleet to discuss him and his legacy. Wonder Boy President Drew Hardesty said the film highlights the life and legacy of Sleet through the eyes of his colleagues and family.
“The Through Sleet’s Eyes (festival) committee wanted to celebrate Black History Month and decided to offer a showing of the documentary ‘A Fine Remembrance’ to continue the discussion on Sleet and his accomplishments,” Hardesty said.
The documentary showing is open to the public and there is no cost to attend.
