The Owensboro Reptile and Exotics Show will offer a hands-on — and totally safe — opportunity to see some rare animals this Sunday at the Owensboro National Guard. Guests can meet vendors and learn about reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, birds, small mammals, and other animals.

The show will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the National Guard (3300 Tamarack Road). Admission is $5 per person, with those under 4 admitted free.

Organizer Melody Mayo said the event is perfect for anyone interested in animals, whether as a collector, a curious soul, or the animal adverse.

“It kind of takes away that barrier and educates people, letting them know how these species really are, that they’re docile. We keep it incredibly family-friendly, so there’s nothing venomous or dangerous at the show; everything is very safe,” Mayo said.

They also note that vendors will sell live and frozen feeders, pet supplies, and other equipment for caring for personal animals.

Mayo assured that all animals would be in some enclosure to prevent snakes from slithering around or birds from flying, but most vendors would allow their animals to be handled under supervision. In doing so, Mayo said they want to dispel misconceptions about the different animals.

“They’ll teach the guests proper care, which is one thing I find incredibly important. It’s very important that people learn proper care and know what’s true about the animals and what isn’t,” Mayo said.

Mayo noted they have done the show in six other locations including Mount Vernon, Shepherdsville, Bowling Green, and their original one in Evansville.
