With the start of school quickly approaching, 2.0 Barber Studio will host a Back-to-School Bash on August 5, offering free haircuts to low-income families. In addition to haircuts, the youngsters can enjoy free pizza while sourcing school supplies and a T-shirt.

Rob Jenkins, owner and operator of 2.0, said they had the idea after partnering with Legacy Owensboro and Girl Talk Studio for a similar event this past spring. So, he and his staff contacted Victoria Self, a local family resource and youth services coordinator (FRYSC) with Daviess County Public Schools, to make it happen.

“The last event we did went really well and was very rewarding,” Jenkins said. “We had several people come to the shop that had never been before. It felt really good to do it.”

To take things a step further, 2.0 asked Self to identify three families from schools across the district to receive a complete back-to-school starter pack, which includes a backpack and an assortment of school supplies.

“Our goal as FRYSC is to eliminate non-academic barriers to learning,” Self said. “Each year, we see firsthand how so many families struggle to provide their children with the basic necessities to return to school.”

Jenkins said they also plan to have T-shirts and Crocs available for students. He leaned on Shoe Stop to help source the Crocs, which he said they would replace for the correct size following the event.

“We’ve worked with a few companies on the event,” he said. “One of our other sponsors is Jason Burnette with Secret Castle Toys and Games. He’s been a big help and will be on-site passing out toys.”

The event will run from 5-8 p.m. at the barbershop at 3000 Alvey Park Drive, Suite F, in Owensboro, just off KY 54.

“We appreciate 2.0’s generosity in hosting this event and for the Owensboro Community’s donations to make this event possible – it truly takes a village,” Self said. “I know many of our students will feel more confident and hopefully have less anxiety about starting a new school year with a new haircut, backpack, and school supplies.”
