Fireworks that explode and light up the sky were made legal in Kentucky in 2010. Just one year later, Marvina’s Fireworks opened on Scherm Road as a year-round fireworks store.
They quickly outgrew the Scherm location and moved to the former Frederica Street Waffle House before moving to the current location at 2935 KY 54 in Owensboro.
Marvin’s Fireworks was a long-time staple across the bridge in Indiana for several years. Marvin’s daughter, Laurie Drake, followed in her father’s footsteps and launched multiple stores across southern Indiana and western Kentucky, including the Owensboro location.
Marvin owned convenience stores for several years, eventually deciding to sell fireworks at his locations. He quickly developed a passion for pyrotechnics and a reputation for offering top-notch fireworks. After dying in 2013, Drake (AKA Marvina) and her brother split up the stores.
Randy Pedley has been managing the Owensboro location for several years and takes great pride in offering the tristate year-round fireworks options.
“We’re air-conditioned and open year-round,” Pedley said. “We’re open by appointment all season and carry long hours during the Fourth of July. We always try to keep our prices low, and we handpick all of our products.”
Pedley said they take a thorough approach when it comes to sourcing their products.
“We don’t just buy what the wholesale representative says,” he said. “We look at all of our fireworks. We go to demonstrations to pick out the ones we really like ourselves. We don’t put anything on the shelves we wouldn’t buy ourselves.”
The team at Marvina’s boasts several years of industry experience and enjoys passing that knowledge on to the customer. Pedley said they can make recommendations based on people’s wants and budgets.
