The Green River Area Down Syndrome Association’s annual Buddy Walk will return to the Owensboro riverfront on October 19. This year, the nonprofit has added a 5K to the long list of festivities.
The Buddy Walk is GRADSA’s only fundraiser. The proceeds fund programming, support services, and advocacy efforts. Executive Director Natalie Love said she and her team are excited to bring back the event for the 27th year.
“This year, we added the 5K in the morning to enhance our celebration and bring even more community members together to support individuals with Down syndrome,” Love said. “These initiatives are crucial for providing the necessary resources and opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome to thrive.”
Love added that organizers are actively searching for corporate sponsors, along with participants.
The 5K is slated for 8 a.m., while the Buddy Walk runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participation in the 5K costs $30, while the walk is $25, and both include a complimentary T-shirt. Click here to register or donate.
GRADSA began nearly three decades ago when parents of children with Down syndrome began increasing awareness in the community. They formed the Buddy Walk 26 years ago and officially obtained nonprofit status in 2001.
This year’s theme is “Assume I can,” and is an extension of the vision of World Down Syndrome Day and the National Down Syndrome Society.
“The message is really powerful,” Love said. “Our individuals deserve a voice. We want to remove stereotypes and emphasize that these individuals can dance, sing, work, and go to college. We want to empower them and show them their true capabilities.”
Love said the nonprofit plans to add additional fundraisers in the future and is forever grateful for the community’s continued support.
“This fundraiser is our only one right now, so it’s so important,” she said. “It’s crucial, and we depend on it. If we have a down year, it could negatively impact our services.”
