The senior community center is bringing back the Silver Salute awards to honor local seniors who made a lasting impact in the areas of education, faith, or inspiration, and who have shown significant support of other seniors (and the public can make nominations now). The awards event will also include “Memory Lane Bingo” — aptly named for giving participants a blast from the past with photos of iconic local landmarks.
The Senior Community Center of Owensboro-Daviess County will host “Celebrating Our Past, Building Our Future” at 6 p.m. on October 3 at Blessed Mother Parish Hall (601 East 23rd Street).
Tickets are $75 each and may be purchased in advance at the Senior Community Center (1650 West Second Street) between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, or online at seniorcenterodc.com/donate. Tickets include a catered meal, music, awards, and bingo..
“Memory Lane Bingo will have names of local places, instead of traditional numbers, that will be sure to ‘take you back’ to the Owensboro and Daviess County of the past,” said Becky Barnhart, executive director for the Senior Community Center. “A slideshow celebrating places from our community’s past will be used instead of traditional bingo balls. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed with the prizes.”
The evening will also feature the return of the long-standing tradition of honoring elder community members through the Silver Salute Awards. Nominations are being accepted in four categories of recognition:
- EDUCATION AWARD
This award will be presented to an individual age 60 or older who has made a significant contribution to others through his/her work in the field of education. This award will honor those who have enriched the lives of others through the gift of teaching or education by any definition.
- FAITH AWARD
This award will be presented to an individual age 60 or older who has made a significant contribution to others through his/her faith community. This category will honor those whose lives exemplify the ideals of their spiritual creeds.
- INSPIRATION AWARD
This award will be presented to an individual age 60 or older who has made a positive difference in the life of another person as a family member, friend, professional mentor, or in any other capacity. This category will include those who have served our country through military service.
- ELIZABETH MUNDAY AWARD
This award will be presented to an individual of any age who has made a significant contribution in supporting or celebrating seniors in Owensboro-Daviess County. This award honors the legacy of the late Elizabeth Munday, who was instrumental in the creation of a Senior Community Center dedicated to providing services, support, resources, learning opportunities, and activities for seniors in our community.
Silver Salute nomination forms are available online here or may be picked up at the Senior Community Center. Nominations are due by September 15. Nominees will be notified in advance and invited to attend the event as special guests.
