The Western Academy at the H.L. Neblett Community Center is in the final days of its open enrollment period for the upcoming school year. Director Olga McKissic said the academic enrichment program is designed for African-American boys in grades 3-11 and focuses on core subjects such as reading and math while also offering a culturally supportive environment to help students succeed.
“We encourage, empower, and educate these young men,” McKissic said. “We want them to know that they are at promise, not at risk. They can achieve whatever they choose, but it starts with them, and we’re here to support them.”
Western Academy is currently registering students online at the center and will have a booth set up during the Groovin’ on the Green event this Saturday on the Convention Center lawn. There, they will provide information and accept enrollments via QR code.
“This year, we’re adding 11th grade to the program,” McKissic explained. “We’ve added one grade each year, and next year will be our final addition — the 12th grade.”
The Academy is now in its sixth year. McKissic said it aims to provide boys with the academic tools they need for success, along with unique opportunities.
Previous students have pursued diverse interests, including scuba diving. This summer, the Academy partnered with the Owensboro Innovation Academy to offer robotics classes, with older students taking the lead in teaching younger participants.
The program was launched under the H.L. Neblett Community Center and is supported by the local public school systems. It also serves students from surrounding counties, including Henderson and McLean.
In keeping with its mission to maintain the legacy of Owensboro’s former Western High School, which operated from 1904 until integration in 1962, the Western Academy offers more than just academics.
“It’s about helping them reach the goals we know they are capable of reaching,” McKissic said.
Families interested in enrolling their children can visit Western Academy’s website or Facebook page or email [email protected]. Enrollment ends soon, and the program kickoff is scheduled for October 5.
