The Masonville and Whitesville Fire Departments have each received a $10,000 grant through the State Farm Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program. The funding will be used to purchase new gear to keep firefighters safe while serving the community.

The local stations are amonth 100 volunteer fire departments nationwide to receive a grant. In collaboration with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), State Farm has awarded $1 million to help local fire departments obtain needed equipment to increase safety and effectiveness.

“Our firefighters work hard to protect our community by helping their neighbors on their worst day,” said Masonville Chief Jeff Williams. “It is critical that we are able to provide these dedicated volunteers with the tools and resources they need to do their job safely and effectively. Thanks to this donation from State Farm and the National Volunteer Fire Council, we will be better equipped and prepared so we can respond at our best.”

In a Facebook post, WFD officials said, “We will use this grant to purchase needed equipment that will enhance the safety of our firefighters and allow us to be better prepared and ready for your next emergency. We will be purchasing a grear extractor to remove cancer causing contaminates from our structural firefighting gear after use.”

This is the inaugural year for the State Farm Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program.  Learn more about the program here.

A panel selected by the NVFC reviewed the applications and chose 100 departments to receive a grant. The NVFC is the leading nonprofit membership association representing the interests of the volunteer fire, EMS, and rescue services.
