Owensboro Dance Theatre is searching for a local hero to play Mother Ginger in its annual production of The German American Bank Nutcracker. Organizers said Mother Ginger is known for her towering blonde hair, extravagant velvet costume, and playful props, adding that she “is always a crowd favorite.” Nominations are due by Thursday.
Joining Mother Ginger on stage are the Polichinelles – a group of Apprentice Company dancers – who emerge from under her grand, skirted costume to perform an upbeat and lively scene. Jaysie Royal with ODT said their joyful personalities and energetic dance bring the holiday spirit to life, making this moment one of the most anticipated in the show.
This year, Owensboro Dance Theatre is asking the community to nominate someone who can embrace the playful role of Mother Ginger.
“Whether it’s a friend, family member, or local leader, anyone with a knack for entertaining and a sense of humor is encouraged to participate,” Royal said.
The nominee who raises the most funds for Owensboro Dance Theatre will be able to take on the role during the upcoming Nutcracker performance. Props such as a hand mirror, giant powder puff, and parasol are part of the fun, and the performer is encouraged to improvise and interact with the audience. There are also her signature long eyelashes.
Nominations are open until October 31. To submit a name, text the nominee’s information to 270-929-1383.
Jeff Fritz, last year’s top fundraiser who played Mother Ginger, shared his excitement about the experience.
“Being Mother Ginger was an amazing experience,” Fritz said. “It is always a joy to be able to encourage the arts within the community, and to be a part of the excitement of the young enjoying the arts is even better. What a great way to get into the holiday spirit.”
