Since Krista Thompson’s journey with breast cancer started last October, she’s had three surgeries and 6 months of chemo, and she’ll begin radiation later this month. Thompson said she had such great local care that her family is hosting a fundraiser in November to help provide that same level of support to others who are battling cancer. The event will feature music by her son Cam and a performance by artist Aaron Kizer.

The “Give Cancer the Boot” fundraiser will take place from 6-10 p.m. on November 16 at The Grand Stable in Philpot (7735 KY 144). Proceeds will benefit the Mitchell Memorial Cancer Center via Owensboro Health Foundation.

“The doctors and nurses at Mitchell Memorial Cancer Center have been wonderful to me,” Thompson said. “Their kind hearts and positivity have helped me focus on staying strong and optimistic throughout my journey. After witnessing the great care that I was given and knowing others were going through cancer treatment, my family decided that we wanted to give back.  We want to help support others who may not have the support I’ve been blessed with. We created this event as a way for the community to come together for a great cause.”

Chad Hart, Owensboro Health Foundation’s director of philanthropy, said “We are extremely grateful that Krista and her family have chosen to give back to the community with a message of hope and empowerment. With their generosity, they are helping others face their cancer journey with strength and courage. Owensboro Health Foundation is honored to help them give cancer the boot.”

OH Foundation Executive Director Tracy Naylor expressed similar appreciation to the Thompson family.

“When a patient or their family express gratitude for the exceptional care they experienced and want to give back to support those who come after them, well that is just an incredible gift,” Naylor said. “We appreciate how the community is rallying behind this one-of-a-kind event. Generosity like this removes barriers and lifts others up by providing much-needed resources for patients in need.”

Cam Thompson is a rising country music singer and performs regularly at the Grand Ole Opry with his band, Kalico. Kizer is a locally renowned artist who often celebrates people and culture through his work. The event will also feature food trucks and merchandise.

Additionally, Barrel Heads Liquor is raffling a 10th Anniversary Booker’s Small Batch Bourbon (bottled 1998) and a 2023 George T. Stagg Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Winners will be drawn during the concert event. Take 10 Market is also donating 10 cents from every gallon of gas purchased from October 1 through November 16.

Individual tickets are $35 and tables of eight are $250. Sponsorships are also available. Tickets can be purchased online at OwensboroHealth.org/GiveCancerTheBoot, where information about the concert, T-shirt sales, and special promotions is also available.
