The American Legion Post 9 and VFW Post 696 have teamed up again for their annual “Blood Drive Battle.” After a kickoff event was held Friday, the organizations are encouraging the public to participate in the effort through Veterans Day on November 11.

The drive started with the bloodmobile at the VFW, located at 311 West Veterans Boulevard, from 9 a.m. to noon Friday and then moved to the American Legion, located at 736 Frederica Street, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The two organizations are partnering with the Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center (WKRBC), located at 3015 Old Hartford Road. The public can donate at WKRBC through November 11, specifying which organization they support.

Leigh Jackson, a member of the American Legion and VFW auxiliaries and an organizer for the event, explained that the competition encourages veterans and community members to give back.

“Last year was our first time trying this, just to see how it would go,” Jackson said. “Since we’re always in friendly competition with the VFW, we thought, why not make it a fun challenge? We wanted to bring the bloodmobile to them, knowing some veterans can’t make it to a blood center otherwise.”

Jackson said the “Blood Drive Battle” concept is similar to rival high school competitions. This year, donors will receive a specially designed shirt featuring the American Legion vs. VFW theme.

Laura Morris, president of the American Legion Auxiliary and manager of Post 9, noted that the timing of the event is no coincidence.

“We chose this month because Veterans Day is (coming up),” she said. “It’s our way of giving blood for the blood they shed for our country. It all ties together and feels like bringing it full circle.”

For Carlotta Richie, an Army veteran and WKRBC phlebotomist, the collaboration means more than just a friendly competition.

“Every donation can save three lives,” Richie said. “It’s an opportunity for veterans to serve in another capacity, showing their dedication to helping others.”

Last year’s blood drive ended in a tie, and Richie said both organizations are eager to claim the bragging rights this year.

“Veterans are always going to compete with one another,” Richie laughed. “We had a good turnout this morning at the VFW and the Legion this afternoon. We’ll keep challenging each other through the 11th.”
