Beverly’s Hearty Slice (BHS) has recently acquired a truck to improve its ability to gather and distribute resources to those in need. The move comes just in time as founder Travis Owsley continues to expand the nonprofit’s reach, adding new stops and special events during the holiday season, including an additional Christmas event at Colony Estates.

For Owsley, the new truck is more than just transportation.

“It’s a blessing,” Owsley said. “Before, we relied heavily on others to haul resources, which often limited what we could take in. Now, with this truck and a storage unit, we’re able to accept more donations – whether it’s coats, food, or other necessities – and get them to the people who need them most.”

BHS purchased the truck from Don Moore Automotive. Owsley said the vehicle gives him and his team peace of mind as they prepare for upcoming events.

Among its latest initiatives, BHS has added Colony Estates as a new stop for regular pizza distribution. After launching there last week, Owsley experienced the need first-hand and was inspired to create a new Christmas event.

So, he made the impromptu decision to take his family shopping for the neighborhood on Saturday morning, spending more than $1,000 on toys, clothes, and other essentials for a Christmas event scheduled for December 6 at Colony Estates.

Owsley said residents can enjoy a festive day with pizza, Farm Bureau-sponsored desserts, and Pepsi beverages. Santa Claus will also make an appearance for photos with children. He added that an anonymous donor made the event possible in honor of Wayne Foster.

“It’s been years since the neighborhood had a Christmas event, so we wanted to make this one special,” Owsley said.

In addition to the Colony Estates event, BHS is gearing up for its fourth annual Thanksgiving celebration on November 22. Held downtown, the event will feature entertainment from the Owensboro Symphony, with the Apollo High School Eaglettes dance team and Owensboro’s Lady Red Devils basketball team on site to distribute food. The event is sponsored by Southern Star Gas Pipelines and will include 350 take-home meals, coats donated by Haley McGinnis Funeral Home, hats made by local craftswoman Ms. Hayden, and refreshments from Pepsi.

Following Thanksgiving, BHS will host its annual Christmas event at the Owensboro Convention Center on December 20, with support from Little Caesars and Pepsi. Guests can expect a similar atmosphere, with meals, gifts, and Santa photos, ensuring families have a memorable holiday. The event is sponsored by Don Moore Automotive.

Beverly’s Hearty Slice continues to grow, fueled by generosity and a deep commitment to service. Owsley said it’s the perfect way to pay homage to his late mother.

“We want to be there for the community and bring a little joy and hope to everyone we meet,” he said.
