Anyone with a live Christmas tree can recycle it by donating it to the “Christmas for the Fishes” tree recycling program hosted by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.
The program will run from December 26 through January 11 at the Grimes Avenue Transfer Station in Owensboro. Trees should be real, not artificial, and should be free of lights, garland, and decorations.
Donated trees will be anchored to environmentally friendly weights and submerged at various depths in different lakes and reservoirs across Kentucky to provide places for fish to feed, shelter, and spawn.
Most of the trees from Owensboro will go to Lake Malone in Muhlenberg County.
To recycle your tree, visit the Grimes Avenue Transfer Station during normal operating hours. After crossing the scales, trees will be collected in the back near the brush staging area.
The City of Owensboro will still be providing curbside pickup of live Christmas trees for city residents beginning January 2.
