The Owensboro Human Relations Commission is inviting the community to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with two events this January: the MLK Dreamer’s Dash 5K Walk & Run and the MLK Day March.
The Dreamer’s Dash, set to begin at 8 a.m. at City Hall on January 18, offers participants a chance to get active while reflecting on Dr. King’s message of justice and equality. The 5K course highlights local landmarks, including Moneta Sleet Park, the H.L. Neblett Center, and Kendall-Perkins Park.
Pre-registered participants will receive commemorative t-shirts, while all runners and walkers will get gift bags. Medals will be awarded to top finishers in various age groups. The event, sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Eagles Owensboro branch, is open to all ages and activity levels. Registration costs $35 and is available online here.
On January 20, the MLK Day March will begin at Daviess County High School and conclude at Owensboro Community and Technical College (OCTC). This reflective event will feature a presentation titled “Unity in the Community—Through a Student’s Lens” and a panel of local youth sharing their perspectives on unity and their experiences in the community. Refreshments will be provided at OCTC, and there is no registration fee for the march.
“Our hope is that through events like the MLK Dreamer’s Dash and yearly March, members of the community have opportunities to come together and support each other,” said Becky Brandle, executive director of the Owensboro Human Relations Commission. “Individuals from different backgrounds and perspectives joining under the common goal of understanding one another and lifting one another up within the community.”
Both events aim to carry forward Dr. King’s vision of solidarity, justice, and service, fostering a deeper understanding of his mission within the Greater Owensboro community.
