Tim Burton is the latest recipient of the Larry Maglinger Award — often referred to as the “Mag Award” — a recognition presented by Visit Owensboro to individuals who go above and beyond as ambassadors for local tourism.
Burton, who works at Academy Sports + Outdoors in Owensboro, was honored during a special presentation attended by local officials, community members, and corporate partners on Tuesday.
“Tim has received an overwhelming number of referrals for this award,” said Mark Calitri, President and CEO of Visit Owensboro. “He’s known for his incredible friendliness, constant smile, and positive outlook. He’s often the first face many visitors see when they come to Owensboro, and he makes a lasting impression.”
Named in honor of the late Larry Maglinger — a former city commissioner and staunch advocate for tourism development — the award is given to individuals who exemplify the same values Maglinger lived by. Calitri said Maglinger’s wife said he was known for treating everyone equally, “whether they were a CEO or a restaurant server, and that award recipients must reflect that same character.”
“Tim not only represents those values, but he lives them out every day,” said Curtis Maglinger, Larry’s son. “He’s a man of integrity who cares deeply about his community. We need more people like Tim in Owensboro.”
Burton, a former intern at Visit Owensboro, has been with Academy Sports for more than two years. His role as a greeter places him front and center with customers — many of whom are in town for sporting events or youth tournaments. The store is a frequent stop for visiting athletes and families needing gear during their stay.
“From the moment I met Tim, I knew he had something special,” said Judson Cook, store director for Academy Sports. “He’s warm-hearted, friendly, and truly cares about everyone who walks through that door. Everyone in town knows Tim.”
Burton, who uses a wheelchair, greets guests with kindness and enthusiasm, making a strong first impression on out-of-town visitors and locals alike.
When asked what he enjoys most about his job, Burton said, “Getting to see so many people. I just try to take everybody one at a time.”
He also offered simple advice for others: “Just stay positive.”
Calitri said the Mag Award has no set schedule and is given only when someone genuinely deserving is identified. Burton is the third recipient since its inception in 2023.
“This is more than just a recognition,” Calitri said. “It’s about celebrating the people who make Owensboro feel like home — from the moment someone steps foot in our city. And Tim does that better than anyone.”
