DCDC honors Deputy Murray as Jailer of the Year, recognizes dozens more with awards

The Daviess County Detention Center has named Deputy Veronica Murray as its 2024 Deputy Jailer of the Year, leading a list of more than two dozen staff members honored for outstanding service, dedication, and heroism.

Murray has served at DCDC for over four years and was commended for her initiative, teamwork, and consistent positive attitude. In addition to her regular duties, she has taken on extra responsibilities in the Booking area.

“She remains diligent and proactive, setting worthwhile standards for others to follow,” DCDC officials said. “We commend her on her dedicated and exceptional service, which benefits Daviess County and the citizens of our community.”

Sergeant Joni Bocianoski, booking supervisor and federal coordinator, was named Supervisor of the Year. An eight-year veteran of the department, Bocianoski currently serves as the Booking Supervisor and Federal Coordinator and was recognized for her work ethic, initiative, and leadership.

Deputy Debra Morton received the Control Room Operator of the Year award. She was praised for her attention to detail, strong work ethic, and the supportive attitude she brings to her role. She has served with DCDC for over four years.

Deputy Christopher Isbill received the Medal of Valor for heroic actions during a January 16, 2025, incident. Isbill helped rescue a driver trapped inside a semi-truck that overturned and caught fire, placing himself in danger to potentially save a life.

Four deputies received Lifesaving medals for their responses during separate incidents. Sergeant James Barkman and Deputy Eric Hayden took quick action to aid an inmate in distress on July 16, 2023, performing CPR and deploying emergency medical equipment. Deputies Cody Hall and Thomas Yarbrough were recognized for preventing an inmate suicide attempt on July 16, 2024, lifting the inmate and removing a ligature to save their life.

  • Honorable Service Award/Command Citation: Major Jack Jones, Deputy Joni Barnett, Deputy Daniel Guillen, Deputy James Hicks, Deputy Beverly Kirkpatrick, Deputy Deborah Mitchell, and Deputy John-Paul Summerall were recognized for initiative, innovation, and accomplishment.
  • Community Service Award: Lieutenant Keith Stiff, Sergeant James Barkman, and Sergeant Gary Sharp were honored for sustained volunteerism and engagement at community events.
  • Jailer’s Award: Lieutenant Zack Ezell, Sergeant Nicholas Tierney, Sergeant Lori Roberson, Deputy William Palmer, Deputy Rita Parham, and Deputy Thomas Yarbrough were recognized for professionalism and dedication.
  • US Military Service Award: Deputies Tristyn Conner (U.S. Army National Guard), Hunter Hedges (U.S. Army Reserve), James Sands (U.S. Army), and Merry Wilborn (U.S. Army) were honored for their military service alongside their work at DCDC.
