The Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce has officially launched the Greater Owensboro Music Commission, a new initiative designed to elevate the region’s status as a music hub by connecting artists, businesses, educators, and the broader community.
The Commission, established in 2025 as an administrative committee of the Chamber, comprises 13 appointed members. It will focus on supporting performance, education, and promotion across a variety of genres, including bluegrass, Americana, folk, rock, gospel, symphonic, and R&B.
“Owensboro’s musical roots run deep,” said Steve Johnson of RepresentGPA Government and Public Affairs, who is helping lead the effort through the Bluegrass Music Initiative. “This Commission is the next step in growing our cultural and economic impact through music. Whether it’s bluegrass or contemporary, our community has the talent and the heart to lead on a global stage.”
Chamber President and CEO Candance Castlen Brake said the initiative ties directly into economic development.
“Quality of life has a direct impact on our local economy, and there is no doubt that our musical performing arts groups and venues stand above most communities,” Brake said. “We are thrilled Steve Johnson is driving this initiative. His passion for our community inspires all those around him.”
One of the group’s first major efforts will be conducting an Owensboro Music Census in partnership with Sound Music Cities, an Austin-based organization that helps cities evaluate and grow their music ecosystems. According to a release from the Chamber, the census is intended to help the Commission better understand local assets and broaden participation and performance opportunities.
Partners in the project include the City of Owensboro, Daviess County Fiscal Court, Visit Owensboro, the Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corp., Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum, RiverPark Center, Friday After 5, Owensboro Symphony, downtown businesses, and music education programs at local schools and colleges.
The release stated that the Commission aims to solidify Owensboro’s identity as a vibrant and inclusive music destination through collaboration, outreach, and support for both musicians and audiences.
