Owensboro Times and PeezO’s Pizza are awarding two $500 “Chick” Owen Memorial Scholarships during this year’s Dust Bowl, honoring the legacy of longtime supporter and community advocate Larry “Chick” Owen.

Named in his memory, the scholarships are open to high school seniors in the Class of 2025 or 2026. Recipients will be recognized during the Dust Bowl’s 3-point contest on July 25.

Now in its 52nd year, the Dust Bowl remains a vibrant celebration of community and tradition — something Owen championed throughout his life until his death in October 2024.

The idea began when Owensboro Times committed to sponsoring a $500 scholarship as part of this year’s Dust Bowl coverage, which OT wanted to ensure honors the impact both the event and Owen have made in the community for decades.

When Larry Owen — owner of PeezO’s Pizza and son of “Chick” Owen — heard about the initiative, he immediately offered to match it in honor of his father’s lifelong love for the tournament and its mission.

“My dad loved the Dust Bowl and everything it stood for — bringing the community together, lifting people up, and giving back,” Larry Owen said. “This scholarship is a great way to honor him and to support young people who are trying to better themselves.”

For the Owensboro Times, the scholarship represents more than a financial award — it’s a chance to invest in the next generation while celebrating one of the city’s most cherished traditions.

“The Dust Bowl has always been about more than basketball — it’s about pride, tradition, and the power of community,” said John Kirkpatrick, assistant editor of the Owensboro Times. “We wanted to do something that reflects those values, and supporting students through a scholarship felt like the perfect fit. Partnering with Byron to honor his father’s legacy just made it even more meaningful.”

Now in its 52nd year, the Dust Bowl continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. This year’s tournament includes new contests and a $2,000 grand prize.

Eligible students can apply now by filling out a short form that includes questions about their involvement in the community and their understanding of the Dust Bowl’s impact over the years.
