The Owensboro Museum of Science and History has rolled out a trio of family-friendly initiatives — Wonder Wednesdays, Member Mornings, and Sensory Mornings — driven by the energy and expertise of newly hired Education Programming Director Alalesa “Ali” Huffman.
Executive Director Isaac Settle said Huffman brings years of experience in education and outreach and is already introducing fresh programming and helping reshape the museum’s focus on learning and accessibility.
“Ali is the perfect addition to our team, and her new initiatives demonstrate our renewed commitment to education, accessibility, and community,” Settle said.
Among Huffman’s first efforts is Wonder Wednesdays, a weekly program in the Sim & Sally Davenport Gallery that includes a story, craft, and hands-on science experiment. Sessions are held at 11 a.m. and noon each Wednesday, lasting about 30–45 minutes. The July theme is “Brain Blast,” focusing on neurology, helmet safety, and mental health. The program is free with museum admission.
Also launching under Huffman’s leadership is Member Mornings, a members-only program designed for young children through elementary age. Held the second Thursday of each month from 9-10 a.m., each session includes a themed story, craft, or activity, and exclusive time in the Playzeum before the Museum opens to the public.
The Museum is also debuting Sensory Mornings, which begin this month and will take place on the first Tuesday of each month from 9-10 a.m. The program is designed for children and families who prefer a relaxed and low-stimulation environment. Sensory boxes and activity bags tailored to current exhibits and seasonal themes will be available. The event is free for Museum members and included with admission for non-members.
“These programs are just the beginning — we’re building a space where learning is active, engaging, and fun,” Huffman said.
