Bethabara Baptist Church in Philpot marked its 200th anniversary last Sunday with a homecoming celebration that drew approximately 200 people, including former pastors, longtime members, and guests from across the country.
Pastor Gerald Peebles said the event featured a worship service, the opening of a time capsule buried 10 years ago, and a message from a representative of the Kentucky Baptist Convention. The day concluded with a meal and a display of historical artifacts chronicling two centuries of the church’s history.
“It was awesome,” Peebles said. “A lot of people have grown up in Bethabara, and they always consider it home when they come back. Some came from as far away as Orlando just to be part of it. It was neat to see families reconnect and share in the church’s legacy.”
In addition to Sunday’s service, the congregation hosted several special events in recent weeks, including a block party, concert, and cemetery service honoring those who came before. A new time capsule was also buried and will be opened in 20 years.
According to church documents, Bethabara Baptist Church was founded on October 5, 1825, when a small group of men and women gathered to form a place of worship in what was then a sparsely populated area of Daviess County. The early members met in a log house built by residents of the community, which also served as a school.
Records indicate that by 1833, the congregation had constructed its own log building on property that today houses the Bethabara Cemetery. In 1854, the church moved to its current site at the intersection of Millers Mill Road and KY 142, where the building has stood since. Over the years, the structure has undergone several additions, including a bell tower in 1885, an education wing in 1964, and a fellowship hall in 1976.
Church records also note that in the early 2000s, the congregation completed construction of its Christian Life Center, a project funded in part by a bequest from Anna Cathryn Foster, whose estate contributed 20% to help retire church debt in honor of her parents.
Peebles said Bethabara remains deeply committed to its mission work.
“We give 25% of our undesignated receipts to missions,” he said, noting that the church has helped start about six other Baptist congregations in the Owensboro area.
The name “Bethabara” appears in the book of John, referring to the place where Jesus was baptized — a fitting symbol, Peebles said, for a congregation that has served as a spiritual home for generations.
“Faith, family, and community have always been at the heart of who we are,” he said. “For 200 years, this church has been faithful to God’s word, and we hope to continue that legacy for many more.”
Bethabara Baptist Church is located at 2946 KY 142 in Philpot.
