Apollo High School student Kassi Hirt has been selected as one of only six students in Kentucky to represent the state in Washington, D.C., through the Civil Air Patrol’s National Legislative Day initiative.
“I felt honored that the Kentucky Advisors for Civil Air Patrol deemed me knowledgeable enough to allow me to represent my state in Washington,” Hirt said.
Hirt has been involved in Civil Air Patrol for about a year and a half. She was introduced to the program during an annual airport education visit hosted by Apollo and said she was initially drawn to it as a way to volunteer in the community beyond school activities.
Her role will be to brief lawmakers on the missions of Civil Air Patrol, advocate for support, and highlight the organization’s value as the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force.
“Civil Air Patrol and JROTC developed my character,” she said. “Character is a very important aspect of being a leader. I have learned self-discipline, time-management skills, self-esteem, how to effectively communicate, as well as caring for the needs of my peers.”
Hirt currently serves as Cadet Commander within Civil Air Patrol and Deputy Commander in JROTC. Her goals include becoming Squadron Commander next school year and ultimately attending the U.S. Air Force Academy to become a fighter pilot.
