Students at Owensboro Middle School are launching a new service-driven initiative aimed at supporting local nonprofits while promoting a positive image of youth in the community.
The BHC (Build His/Her CROWN) program, led by Marshall and Allyson Sanders, recently introduced its final pillar, “Neighborly,” which focuses on service, collaboration, and compassion. The initiative encourages students to learn about local organizations and take an active role in giving back.
As part of the effort, BHC students will lead a month-long donation drive throughout April to benefit local shelters. The drive will collect nonperishable food, socks, and hygiene products, with donations distributed among multiple community agencies.
Organizers said the initiative comes at a time when concerns about youth violence have been in the spotlight, and students are working to show a different narrative through service and leadership.
“A lot of people who are in this situation never knew this would happen to them. A wise man once told me, ‘ What goes around comes back around,” said Student Ambassador Braela.
“Don’t be a zero—help and be the hero,” said Student Ambassador Lydia.
“The more you help others, the more you get back,” said Student Ambassador Dia’Ryan, who added that the group hopes the effort will help the community view youth in a more positive light.
More details about the initiative will be shared on March 30 during a panel session at Owensboro Middle School, where local nonprofit representatives will speak with students. Following the session, organizers said students will invite peers and the broader community to contribute donations through the end of April.
