SIYA camp returns for 21st year, offers immersive arts experience for students

Registration is now open for Owensboro Public Schools’ Summer Institute for Young Artists (SIYA) Camp, a two-week program designed to give students an immersive, hands-on experience in the arts while connecting with peers from across the district.

Now entering its 21st season, the camp continues to evolve while maintaining its core mission of helping young artists grow in a focused, creative environment.

“The purpose is to provide younger students with an immersive arts experience,” said Kara Smith, OPS Fine Arts Coordinator. “They come to camp, choose areas they’re passionate about, and get an intensive two-week experience where that is their full focus.”

Held at Owensboro High School from May 26-29 and June 1-5, the camp is open to students entering 4th through 9th grade. Each day runs from morning through mid-afternoon and includes structured time for instruction, collaboration, and performance preparation.

Students select both a major and an elective area of study, choosing from disciplines such as band, orchestra, choir, theater, dance, and visual art. That structure allows campers to dive deeply into one primary area while also exploring another creative outlet.

“It’s just a really cool way to bring kids together to focus on their passion and grow towards the artists that they want to become,” Smith said.

While some programs — such as theater and visual arts — may be limited by space or materials, Smith said the goal is to preserve student choice whenever possible.

“We do our best to give every child their first choice,” she said. “They’re going to be more excited and more successful when they’re doing something they chose.”

The camp typically serves between 200 and 230 students each year, drawing participants from across the district and broader community. First-time campers are required to submit a teacher recommendation form to help instructors better understand each student’s experience and strengths ahead of time.

“It helps us get to know the students before they arrive — their strengths and what they want to work on,” Smith said. “That allows us to prepare as best as possible.”

The program is designed for students of varying skill levels, with an emphasis on interest and effort rather than expertise.

“We’re looking for students who have a genuine interest in the arts,” Smith said. “They don’t have to be experts — just willing to work hard, try new things, and grow.”

One unique component of SIYA is its built-in mentorship structure. High school students who previously attended the camp can return as interns, assisting instructors and working directly with younger participants.

“Many of our interns were campers themselves,” Smith said. “It’s a great opportunity for them to come back, give back, and gain experience working with younger students.”

Throughout the two-week session, students prepare for multiple performances, including a mid-camp talent show and a final showcase that highlights what they’ve learned.

“The talent show is always phenomenal because it features students who are already passionate about the arts,” Smith said.

The camp concludes with a full-scale performance on the final evening, featuring music, theater, dance, and a visual art gallery.

“On the final night, students present everything they’ve worked on,” she said. “It’s impressive to see what they accomplish in just two weeks.”

A defining tradition of the program is its unified choir performance, where all students — regardless of their primary discipline — come together for a final musical piece.

Tuition for the camp is $150 and includes meals, supplies, and a T-shirt. Reduced rates are available for qualifying students. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until spots are filled, with a May 13 application deadline.
