A community-wide effort to get Owensboro residents moving returns later this month with a kickoff event focused on fitness and connection. The Walk Owensboro Spring Kick-Off is set for April 28, from 4-5:30 p.m. at Legion Park, where participants can join group walks, connect with others, and learn more about the ongoing initiative.
Organizers said Walk Owensboro is designed to make physical activity accessible and social for people of all ages and fitness levels. Participants are encouraged to walk with family, coworkers, friends, or neighbors while taking advantage of local parks.
The kickoff event will include group walks at 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., along with snacks, family-friendly activities, and opportunities to join or register a walking group. Giveaways and prizes will also be available.
“Walk Owensboro is more than just exercise. It’s about building connections. This initiative creates an opportunity for people to come together in a simple, accessible way that supports both physical and mental health,” said Collette Carter, Owensboro Health Healthpark Director. “Walking has proven benefits for reducing stress, improving mood, and boosting overall wellness, but it’s even more impactful when done alongside others. By bringing together families, coworkers, friends, and neighbors, we’re helping strengthen relationships and foster a greater sense of community across Owensboro in a fun, supportive environment.”
Activities will include a scavenger hunt and educational resources focused on the benefits of walking.
The initiative is a partnership between Owensboro Parks & Recreation, Owensboro Health, RiverValley Behavioral Health, the Green River District Health Department, and the Greater Owensboro Leadership Institute.
