Kentucky Wesleyan College President Dr. James Cousins has been named the next president of Wilkes University in Pennsylvania, a move that will bring his five-year tenure in Owensboro to a close on July 31.

The announcement comes one day after Kentucky Wesleyan revealed that Cousins would step down after five years leading the college.

“I’m deeply grateful for the trust you have placed in me and for the opportunity to serve alongside you during this chapter in the college’s history,” Cousins said in a statement. “The relationships my family and I have built and the experiences we have shared will remain among my most treasured memories.”

Cousins said he and his family will always value the friendships they formed in Owensboro.

“Carrie, J.P., and I have loved the five years we’ve spent here in Owensboro,” he said. “We’re so grateful to so many people in the community for making Owensboro feel like home.”

Cousins pointed to several accomplishments during his tenure, including Kentucky Wesleyan’s first graduate program, improved financial stability, new revenue sources, the creation of the Center for American Civics, expanded healthcare partnerships, and a partnership with the YMCA.

“We accomplished so much, and we’ve set the college off on a great trajectory, and that’ll continue,” Cousins said.

Board of Trustees Chair Keith Sharber congratulated Cousins on his appointment.

“Dr. Cousins’ selection as president of Wilkes University is a reflection of the leadership, vision, and dedication he has demonstrated throughout his time at Kentucky Wesleyan College,” Sharber said.

The Kentucky Wesleyan Board of Trustees is expected to announce interim leadership and details of the search for the college’s next president in the coming days.
