A new fitness competition designed to test endurance, strength, and mental toughness is coming to Owensboro this summer.
The Forge Challenge, presented by Edge Body Boot Camp, will take place July 18 at the Owensboro Sportscenter as part of Visit Owensboro’s Bluegrass Clash sports festival.
The event combines endurance running with strength-based obstacles in a format inspired by the growing popularity of hybrid fitness competitions such as HYROX, DEKA, and Spartan races. Organizers describe it as a race built for everyday athletes, blending endurance and functional fitness in a fast-paced competitive environment.
Participants will complete a 500-meter run before tackling each of 10 workout stations, which include ski ergs, sled pushes, sled pulls, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmer’s carries, tire flips, walking lunges, wall balls, and cycling. Competitors will run approximately 500 meters between each station, testing their endurance, strength, grit, and mental toughness.
Organizer Chris Zachary said the event was created to bring a style of competition that has exploded in popularity overseas and in major U.S. cities to the Owensboro area.
“It’s kind of the new wave of fitness races,” Zachary said. “They’re super popular in bigger cities, and there’s really nothing like it in our area. We wanted to create an event where people can experience that style of race, whether they’re preparing for a full-distance event or they just enjoy hybrid fitness.”
The Forge Challenge is designed as a shorter-distance version of those national competitions, making it accessible to competitive athletes, weekend warriors, and anyone looking to challenge themselves.
“We created this event with the inspiration that pressure creates strength,” Zachary said. “It doesn’t matter if people are looking to win or just finish. Everyone will leave stronger than when they started.”
The race will primarily take place inside the Sportscenter, with participants running a course that extends around the building and into the parking lot before returning inside for the next station.
Zachary said organizers are planning a festival atmosphere outside as well, with sponsors, recovery stations, and spectators cheering competitors throughout the event.
“We wanted the energy to stay high the whole time,” he said. “When competitors go outside for the run, they’re still going to have people cheering them on and activities happening.”
Registration is currently open, and Zachary said the event is about halfway full. Organizers expect to accommodate between 110 and 120 participants and will accept race-day registrations if space remains. Individual registration is $95, while a doubles division is available for $185 per team.
To help participants prepare, Edge Body Boot Camp offers Sunday morning advanced training sessions geared specifically toward the race’s combination of running and strength exercises.
Edge Body Boot Camp has operated in Owensboro for 14 years, with Zachary owning the business for the past 12 years.
Zachary said he hopes the event leaves a lasting impact beyond race day.
“We want to help Owensboro become a better, fitter place to live,” he said. “Whether someone is racing to win or just challenging themselves to finish, this is about building a stronger community.”
The Forge Challenge begins at 7 a.m. July 18 at the Owensboro Sportscenter. More information and registration are available at runsignup.com/Race/KY/Owensboro/TheForgeChallenge.
