“Shrek The Musical” opens tonight at the RiverPark Center, bringing the Tony Award-winning Broadway adaptation to Owensboro for a three-show weekend run.
Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, the production features an original score by Jeanine Tesori. The musical brings the film’s iconic characters to life in a hilarious, heart-filled adventure suitable for theatergoers of all ages.
The production marks the directorial debut for Justin Miller, who is helming the large-scale show alongside his mother.
“There are several elements to Shrek that I could highlight as reasons to come, but ultimately I will say that it’s just plain fun,” Miller said. “You’ll get a bit of everything in the show. The vocals will blow you away, the comedy will leave you in stitches, and you’ll leave appreciating all of the heart that is put into this show from every single individual involved.”
Miller noted that the scale of the production is particularly impressive for a local community group, bringing together both new and familiar faces from the regional theater scene.
“I think Owensboro will see several of their own in a very different light,” Miller said. “We have some performers that are joining a large production like this for the first time. We also have seasoned actors that have graced Owensboro stages for years, as well as some wonderful talent from the surrounding area.”
According to Miller, bringing together performers of all backgrounds showcases the depth of local talent.
“With all levels joining together on one stage, it’s sure to open some eyes to the incredible level of talent and artistry that is available in everyone’s backyard,” he said. “I was very excited to tackle this show and was able to do so by taking on more of a co-directorship with my mom, so that has been special as well. It is a massive show with several larger-than-life elements. Seeing blocking that you’ve created have life breathed into it by truly remarkable performers is such a neat experience, and I hope to direct more projects in the future.”
Performances will take place at the RiverPark Center at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Miller said, “This cast and crew have made the experience so wonderful from beginning to end, and I can’t wait for them to share their work with Owensboro.”
