Owensboro Grain Company has been busier than normal the past several months, as they are in the process of building their third grain bin that’ll house a million bushels of soybeans.

Executive Vice President John Wright said the improvements would benefit area farmers.

“We are constantly expanding because we’re trying to increase our purchasing with the farmers in the state of Kentucky,” he said. “We have this high-feed, high-efficiency new elevator. With the unloading system, the farmers are able to unload soybeans at a much faster rate, which is helpful to them because trucks are not stuck in line for a long period of time.”

Wright said it used to be that the trucks would take a long time to get unloaded and the combines were sitting and waiting for the trucks at the farm.

“Now, the trucks are getting back before the combines are ready to unload. I think that helps the farming community to be more efficient and not create a snag with their harvesting process.”

The project was approved in November, and Wright said the concrete foundation was laid soon after.

Wright said everything is on schedule and it should be done by this year’s harvest season.

“They’ve got four rings that have already been welding up. What they’re doing is they’re welding the coned roof,” he said. “What they do is float that cone roof up. As they build and complete the welding of the rings, they continue to float higher and they’ll do that until the last ring has been completed and then they’ll weld the roof to the last ring of metal.”

Wright said Owensboro Grain has farmers come from as far as 150 miles to us their elevators.
