It truly is the most wonderful time of year for several Owensboro small businesses who will be participating in Holiday Open House over the next two weekends. Owensboro Times asked a couple of those businesses to share some of their secrets for transforming their stores and what new items they will be offering to shoppers this year. Below is a sampling of the participating locations, along with their hours and locations.

Willow Tree owner Jacinta Smith said it has taken her nearly two-and-a-half months to convert the entire store into a Winter Wonderland, including eight Christmas trees.

Smith said that in the past she has put everything away and just displayed Christmas items. This year she decided to try something different.

“This year I left everything in here,” Smith said. “I put up eight trees and made regular everyday things look like Christmas.”

Smith said she looks forward to the Open House each year because, with “the ambiance of the lights, it’s more of a festive time; it gives everybody a different feel.”

She also recognizes that it’s good for business because it increases clientele who are looking for gifts or items to spruce up their house.

Something new to the Willow Tree is their line of Jason Stoddard Artisan Jewelry. Smith said the line features a family bracelet which can be personalized and has already been very popular, as have their large collection of snow globes.

Simply Chic owner Debi Ford said it takes her about two weeks to totally transform the whole store. This year Ford has seven different themed Christmas trees on display. “I cut back this year,” Ford laughed.

Each tree is carefully decorated with various themed ornaments for sale from cardinals and woodsy animals, to classic Victorian and bright and whimsical.

“I can’t wait for people to see the trees,” Ford said, adding that they decorate different trees each year.

Ford also said she enjoys seeing groups of women, and friends get together to shop “all over town” during such a festive time of year.

Simply Chic will be offering several incentives throughout the weekend including refreshments, giveaways, drawings for ornaments and 5 to 30 percent off a purchase, and the chance to enter the drawing for a $100 Simply Chic gift card by finding the hidden pickle among the Christmas trees.
