After Indiana Packers Corporation’s acquisition of Specialty Food Group in Owensboro closed on October 1, 2018, it has been business as usual for SFG.

Makers of Kentucky Legend, the leading boneless ham in the country, SFG is now a subsidiary of Indiana Packers, but will continue to operate in Owensboro as Specialty Foods Group.

“It was a fairly seamless transition,” said Mike Bieger, President of SFG. “Leadership and management will remain in Owensboro, and SFG will continue to produce the same high quality, loved meat products it always has.”

SFG employs more than 600 people in Owensboro, and no layoffs are expected as a result of the acquisition. Bieger said Indiana Packers is thrilled to be part of the Owensboro community and intends to continue operations for a long time.

Indiana Packers is a pork processor headquartered in Delphi, Ind. The company also operates pork processing facilities in Frankfort, Ind., and Holland, Mich., in addition to SFG. They sell products under the Indiana Kitchen brand and under private labels.

Indiana Packers will continue to invest in the Kentucky Legend brand, according to Bieger, as well as continuing SFG’s community investments in Owensboro. “They’re committed to being a good corporate citizen in all the communities where they have facilities,” Bieger said.

The future for the newly-expanded company is bright. “The acquisition has strengthened both Indiana Packers and SFG,” Bieger said. “We consistently seek new ways to improve and are excited about the prospects we see before us.”
