The South Central Bank branch at 300 Southtown Blvd. will be closing permanently on June 30. Until that time, the drive-thru will remain open with lobby access available by appointment only.

“We just no longer need this fourth branch location in Owensboro-Daviess County to serve and grow our customer base,” said Kevin Carrico, Market President. “We feel like with our other three locations (in Owensboro) we’ll continue to be able to serve and grow our customer base going forward.”

The bank still has three other locations in Owensboro: 1375 Carter Road, 42301 (270-685-8208), 2715 Frederica Street, 42301 (270-926-5951); and 3010 KY 54, 42303 (270-691-0919).

In a letter sent to customers, officials wrote “If you have a safe deposit box located at Southtown, please call us to schedule an appointment to come in, remove the contents of your box, and return the keys. Please let us know which South Central Bank office you would like to open your new safe deposit box at so we can prepare the paperwork in advance and have the keys ready for you upon arrival at that location.”

Carrico said no jobs will be lost, as employees will be moved to one of the other locations.

South Central has operated out of the building on Southtown Boulevard for more than 20 years.

“It served its purpose back then, but we no longer utilized the whole building,” Carrico said. “We were already down to the first floor and it was just the right business decision to no longer have this big building, so we made the decision to sell the property.”

The rise in online banking was also a factor in closing the location.

“For the banking industry as a whole, mobile and online banking continues to grow faster than brick-and-mortar transactions, especially with the pandemic and what it’s done,” Carrico said. “It has accelerated that for sure.”
