Cash's Cards

Cash’s Cards and Collectibles will open their doors in Towne Square Mall on May 17. The store, located just inside the main entrance, will feature a wide array of sports cards and memorabilia.

Business partners Mike Coleman, Jr. and Tom Galloway will own and operate the shop.

Coleman recently moved back to town from Frankfort and got back into football cards, and he bought some sealed boxes off the internet.

One of those boxes happened to feature a rare card — Luka Doncic, a walking highlight reel for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. Coleman didn’t immediately realize the card’s true value.

“I got on eBay and did some exploring, the card was worth $5,000 — the sports card market had blown up,” he said.

Further investigation revealed that the sports card market had, indeed, experienced a revelation. Lebron James and Mickey Mantle’s rookie cards were reeling in upwards of $5.2 million, and where there were once 10 companies flooding the market with cards, there are now only four.

“When we were kids, we all had them. They were overproduced,” Coleman said. “This isn’t the case anymore. People are camping outside of Target and Meijer just to get one box.”

Coleman eventually sold the Doncic card, using the revenue to do some more dabbling in the industry. With Moorman by his side, the hobby soon transitioned into a full-time gig, allowing him to resign from his day job in construction sales.

Growing tired of the constant grind, Coleman decided it was time to start buying from the manufacturer, but before he could do that he needed a brick-and-mortar location.

So, he partnered with his long-time friend Tom Galloway to open Cash’s Cards and Collectibles.

“There is some luck involved, but you have to know what to buy,” Coleman said. “We will specialize in sealed hobby boxes and box breaks.”

Because hobby boxes can be expensive, a box break allows up to 10 individuals to buy into a box where the cards are then distributed at random in a lottery-type format. Also big in the market right now are logo cards, where the logos are taken off of players’ jerseys and placed in the card.

Coleman said with Lebron James, Jr. entering the NBA soon, grabbing a dual logo card of him and his dad would be the pinnacle achievement in the industry right now. Coleman has aspirations for cards of that caliber to soon grace Towne Square Mall.

“I think the mall has a lot of potentials,” he said. “I know it’s definitely a good spot for us.”
