Gramps Coffee and Donuts opened at 7 a.m. Tuesday with 800 donuts, ready to celebrate their grand opening. Before 11 a.m., they had a line outside the door and were already sold out.

Manager Sarah Kendall said they had to make a quick run to another store to gather more dough so they can make donuts for Wednesday but ensured they would have more ready to serve.

Gramps — located at the corner of 4th and Frederica streets — had their soft opening prior, but they didn’t experience nearly the scale of customers as they did Tuesday.

“Everyone has been really supportive and the community has been really excited for us to open, and then just to see just a really huge line out the door this morning was really awesome,” Kendall said.

Right now, Kendall said they just have their front dining area open but there are plans to open a second dining room toward the back of the building. Kendall said the second area will be away from the coffee production and provide a quieter space for guests to study and do their work.

The neighboring businesses have also been supportive, according to Kendall.

“I think that we’re offering something new that Owensboro doesn’t have yet, and so we’re excited to bring that here,” Kendall said. “We hope that whoever comes in here just feels warm and invited into here.”
